Solar Powered Greenhouse

Built with annualized geo solar technology, designed to heat itself in winter with summer solar gain, collected by the 200sq. foot solar collector on the hill side below the green house.

The solar collector can reach temperatures up to 300 Celsius degrees.

This heat is stored in earth under, behind and beside the green house.

This mass of earth all around the greenhouse serves to cool the building in summer inspite of a south facing front wall that is predominantly glass.

There are temperature probes in the earth in various locations under and behind greenhouse that track the earth heating and cooling cycles through each of the seasons. With this information we can adjust the air flow from the solar collector to maximize solar gain.

The 3000 sq. foot green roof grows commercial crops of organic basil, garlic, and cherry tomatoes.

The greenhouse is fully off grid and is powered by a 7 kilowatt solar system backed up by a methane/propane powered generator.

We store the power with 24 2V batteries, each of which takes 2 men to lift

Our Solar hot water heater provides us with all our domestic water needs as well as powering our solar hot tub.

Chuckleberry Community supports itself through the operation of an Organic Shoots business. This Business is the primary shoots supplier to the resteraunts in Nelson BC.

After harvesting the shoots our triple barrel composter converts the organic matter into soil in 24 days. The addition of a solar powered gear motor will turn the soil continuously which will reduce the composting time to 4 days!

The cold cellar is buried at the far west end of the green house and is cooled by fans connected to a differential thermostat controller. the temperature probes inside and outside the cold cellar to automatically regulate the optimum temperature to preserve the gardens' abundant harvests.

There is a 600 sq,feet seminar room that is used for group meditation, yoga, blessings, training  as well as workshops. see workshop space tab.

This joins a community kitchen and dining room space.

Curious visitors are warmly welcomed.
